Periodontics

Periodontics is a dental specialty that treats diseases that damage the supporting structures of the teeth. If not treated, gum disease may result in tooth loss due to the destruction of tissue that holds your teeth in place.

At Norton Dental Guelph, we frequently provide gentle, comfortable treatment options for patients with mild to severe gum problems.

Gingivitis is a condition in which the gums become inflamed or irritated due to plaque buildup. When gingivitis is left untreated, the condition can develop into gum disease in which the gums begin to pull away from the teeth forming pockets. These pockets can lead to infection as they allow plaque and bacteria to infiltrate below the gum line.

The effects of gingivitis can be reversed. For this reason, we recommend regular dental exams and professional teeth cleanings to help facilitate the early detection of oral health problems so they may be treated as soon as possible. Periodontitis, or gum disease, is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults.

We offer both non-invasive and surgical treatment options such as scaling, root planing, and root surface debridement.

Your dentist will examine your gums to check for any signs of gum recession or loose teeth. He/she will also check for any spaces between the teeth and gums. If any periodontal pockets are detected, your dentist will measure the depth to properly assess the health of your gums. If necessary, x-rays will be taken to evaluate the health of the bone below the gumline. To schedule your periodontal consult, call (519) 824-2966 today.
